CHESED CARE GROUP – A Talk by Lynne Segal: Enriching our Language of Care

September 10 Tuesday @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Members and their family and friends are invited to a talk by Lynne Segal.

The care we give each other in our community, both formally and informally, is a crucial part of our practice. The Chesed group is part of that practice and has invited Lynne to help us in the development of our thinking in this area.

Lynne will speak on her latest book, “Lean on Me: A Radical Politics of Care”. She will talk about the significance and nature of care, addressing why it has always been undervalued, while suggesting that we need to enrich our impoverished language of care.

For “care” involves not only the “hands-on” care of directly looking after the physical and emotional needs of others – crucial as that is. It is also about recognising our human interdependence and our shared vulnerability throughout our lives, as well as understanding our ever-greater global interdependence.

This means caring across borders, caring for refugees and addressing the causes of people needing to seek shelter elsewhere. So Lynne argues for a more expansive understanding of care, as paying attention to whatever enables us all to live and to flourish, along with the world we inhabit.
